BRIEF HISTORY

NAPOLEON

NAPOLEON WAS BORN IN AJACCIO ON AUGUST 15, 1769 AND DIED ON THE ISLAND OF ST. ELENA 5 MAY 1821. HE WAS A POLITICAL STRATEGIST AND FOUNDER OF THE FIRST FRENCH EMPIRE. HE WAS AN ARTILLERY OFFICER AND THEN A GENERAL DURING THE FRENCH REVOLUTION, THANKS TO HIS VICTORIES HE OBTAINED DURING THE CAMPAIGN OF ITALY. AFTER THE COUP HE PROCLAIMED HIMSELF EMPEROR. HE WAS A GREAT STRATEGIST, PRESIDING OVER 20 YEARS OF CAMPAIGNS IN EUROPE. INTERESTING TO KNOW THAT HE DESCENDS FROM ITALY. IN FACT, HE ALWAYS FELT AN ATTACHMENT TO ITALY AND ITS ARTISTIC CULTURE. APRIL 12, 1796 HE STARTED HIS CAMPAIGN IN ITALY AND WAS ABLE TO DEFEAT THE AUSTRIAN FORCES, EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE GREATER THAN THOSE OF NAPOLEON. INTERESTINGLY THE ITALIAN FLAG WAS BORN AT THAT TIME, AND DIFFERS FROM THE FRENCH ONE ONLY BY ONE COLOUR. OTHER IMPORTANT CAMPAIGNS WERE EGYPT AND SYRIA. IT WAS NAPOLEON WHO GAVE BIRTH TO MODERN EGYPTOLOGY. HIS MOST IMPORTANT WORK WAS THE NAPOLEONIC CODE, HIS CIVIL CODE. IT FINALLY ELIMINATED THE LEGACY OF THE ANCIENT REGIME OF FEUDALISM, OF ABSOLUTISM AND CREATED A SOCIETY THAT WAS MOSTLY LIBERAL BOURGEOIS. NOT FORGETTING THE AGREEMENTS MADE BETWEEN NAPOLEON AND TSAR ALEXANDER THE FIRST WHO AT FIRST FEARED NAPOLEON AND REFUSED TO COOPERATE WITH HIM.
IT CAME TO HIS ATTENTION THAT THE TSAR SECRETLY WANTED TO MAKE AN ANTI-NAPOLEONIC COALITION, SO HE DECIDED TO EMBARK ON A DECISIVE CAMPAIGN AGAINST RUSSIA. HE WAS ABLE TO DEFEAT THE RUSSIANS AND REACHED MOSCOW. BUT THE FATE OF MORALE LASTED ONLY 35 DAYS. SEEING THAT WINTER WAS APPROACHING HE DECIDED TO RETREAT, BUT THIS ERROR PROVED TO BE FATAL, THOSE OF HIS ARMY NOT KILLED BY THE TSAR PERISHED IN THE WINTER. THE GREAT FRENCH ARMY SUFFERED GRAVE LOSSES.  ALSO HE KNEW THAT A FRENCH GENERAL GAVE FALSE NEWS OF HIS DEATH AND ATTEMPTED A COUP D’ÉTAT. HE DECIDED TO LEAVE RUSSIA AND GO BACK TO PARIS TO RESOLVE MATTERS, BUT THE POWERS ALLIED TO HIM TURNED AGAINST HIM AND JOINED RUSSIA. ESSENTIALLY EVEN FRANCE TURNED ITS BACK ON HIM. HE HAD TO ESCAPE BUT WAS CAPTURED BY THE ENEMY AND EXILED TO THE ISLAND OF ELBA. HE WAS SUBSEQUENTLY ABLE TO ESCAPE FROM THE ISLAND AND REORGANISE HIS ARMY IN FRANCE. THE LAST BATTLE OF WATERLOO WAS DECISIVE. DESPITE THE STRATEGIC PLANNING OF NAPOLEON HE WAS NOT AT THE HEIGHT OF HIS GREATNESS, SOME OF HIS ERRORS PROVED FATAL, AND THEREFORE HE WAS DEFEATED. HE WAS SENT ON EXILE AGAIN THIS TIME TO ST. ELENA WHERE HE DIED MAY 5, 1821 OF A STOMACH TUMOUR OR AS SOME SAY POISONING.
