BRIEF INTRODUCTION

APOLLO

APOLLO IS A DIVINITY OF ANCIENT GREEK RELIGION. GOD OF ALL THE ARTS, OF MEDICINE, MUSIC, AND PROPHECY. HIS MAIN SYMBOL IS THE SUN, HE WAS VENERATED IN ROMAN RELIGION AS THE UNCONQUERED SUN, THE GOD OF THE SUN, ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ROMAN DIVINITIES.
IN GREEK DIVINITY APOLLO IS THE ILLEGITIMATE SON OF ZEUS AND LETO, HE IS THE TWIN BROTHER OF ARTEMIS, DIANA TO THE ROMANS, THE GODDESS OF HUNTING. THE GOD APOLLO WAS IMPORTED TO ROME DIRECTLY FROM THE GREEK AND DID NOT HAVE ROMAN EQUIVALENT. HIS WORSHIP WAS ENCOURAGED BY EMPEROR AUGUSTUS. APOLLO CAME NORMALLY PICTURED WITH A CROWN, A DRAWN SYMBOL OF VICTORY. HIS TYPICAL ATTRIBUTES ARE BOW AND HARP, AND HIS EMBLEM THE SACRIFICIAL TRIPOD, A SYMBOL OF HIS PROPHETIC POWERS. ANIMALS SACRED TO THE GOD WERE THE SWAN, THE WOLF, THE CICADA, THE FALCON, THE CROW AND THE SNAKE. ANTHER ANIMAL IS THE ROOSTER THAT SYMBOLIZES HOMOSEXUAL LOVE AND THE GRIFFIN. THE TITLE FAR MORE OFTEN ATTRIBUTED TO APOLLO AND OFTEN SHARED BY HIS SISTER ARTEMIS, WAS THAT OF PHOEBE, LITERALLY MEANING SPLENDID OR SHINING. REFERRING TO HER BEAUTY BOTH BY AND DAY AND MOONLIGHT, IN THE CASE OF ARTEMIS. REGARDING ARTEMIS WE GIVE CERTAIN GESTURES. SHE IS THE GODDESS OF THE HUNTING, OF VIRGINITY AND ALSO A MOON DIVINITY. SHE WAS ON HER OWN REQUEST A VIRGIN, BUT SHE WAS BELOVED AS A GODDESS OF FERTILITY AND DELIVERY, FOR IT IS SAID THAT SHE HAD HELPED HER MOTHER LETO DELIVER HER BROTHER APOLLO. AS WELL AS BEING THE GODDESS OF LIGHT SHE IS OFTEN REPRESENTED BY TWO TORCHES LIT AND FLAMING.
